Wind power output in Ireland reached record levels today according to the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA).
A new record of 1,564 megawatts (MW), enough to power over one million Irish homes, was recorded at 8am on Wednesday 20th November as families across the country sat down to breakfast.
According to figures from EirGrid, who monitor electricity generation and usage nationally, the record level of wind generation corresponded to over 45% of the Irish electricity demand at that time, which would be sufficient to power more than 1 million homes.
Commenting on the new Irish record, IWEA's Chief Executive, Kenneth Matthews said: "As families across the country sat down for breakfast this morning, wind energy generation was breaking records.
"This new peak shows the vital role which wind energy is already playing in Ireland's domestic energy supply, as sustained levels of wind generation are being created.
"As global talks continue on combating climate change, we are proud that Ireland is leading the way in demonstrating the potential of wind energy. In addition to the environmental benefits which clean energy offers, we are also seeing exciting new opportunities in terms of jobs and investment with over 3,400 people already employed in this sector."
