The provisional Northern Ireland Local Authority Collected (LAC) Municipal Waste Management Statistics October – December 2013 have been published today.

The statistics reveal that just over half, 50.4%, of local authority collected municipal waste was sent to landfill. This is an improvement of just over seven percentage points when compared with the same period of the previous year (57.6%). During this period, the proportion of local authority collected municipal waste sent for recycling and composting increased by three percentage points from 35.8% to 38.7%.

The percentage of household waste recycled or composted was 39.2%. This was an increase of almost three percentage points compared with the same period last year when 36.2% was recycled or composted.

Whilst the total amount of LAC municipal waste arisings (217,265 tonnes) remained similar to the amount in October to December 2012 (216,987 tonnes), the non household element of this (24,430 tonnes) decreased by 6.0% when compared with the same quarter last year (25,982 tonnes). The household element showed an increase of 1% (from 191,005 tonnes in October to December 2012 to 192,835 tonnes this quarter).

The data in this report are based on returns made to WasteDataFlow, which is a web based system, used by all UK local authorities to report LAC municipal waste.
