Farmer Fined For Pollution Offences

A Co Tyrone farmer pleaded guilty and was fined a total of £3,000 plus £25 Court Costs and Offenders Levy of £15 at Dungannon Magistrates Court.

Mr William James Hall, Killybracken Road, Dungannon, Co Tyrone was fined for making polluting discharges to a waterway.

On 8 March 2013, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, observed an extensive quantity of slurry in a field adjacent to the Killybracken Road. Slurry run-off was observed flowing through a hedge line and into a small waterway. This small waterway was full of slurry and another dark coloured liquid. This polluting discharge entered another waterway parallel to the Killybracken Road before entering a larger unnamed tributary of the Rhone River. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to premises owned by Mr Hall.

A sample taken on 8 March 2013, confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
