Planning Approved To Restore Railway Signal Cabin

Northern Ireland Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has announced planning approval for the restoration of an historic railway signal cabin in Downpatrick, County Down.

The signal cabin has lain in a garden in Ballinamallard for nearly 60 years. The signal cabin is to be restored to its former glory by the Downpatrick and County Down Railway (DCDR) Society after securing a grant of nearly £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Mr Durkan said: "This is good news for tourism in Downpatrick. The town already enjoys a rich heritage and this is a modest but important addition to that.

"This application was turned around in less than three months. This demonstrates the advantages of working with DOE Planning and submitting good quality applications and supporting information. Decisions like this support my vision for a stronger economy through the promotion of tourism."
