New Playground Opens In Dublin

Dublin City Council's new playground at Merrion Square Park is to officially open today, Wednesday 30 July.

Councillor Kate O'Connell, representing the Lord Mayor of Dublin, is to open the new play area.

Oscar Wildes' short story 'The Selfish Giant' forms the theme for the captivating new playground. The Children's Playground Company in Naas designed and built the play units, and an element of the plan was the design and installation of the 'Giant', an 8-metre tall play unit with outreaching arms to welcome the children into the playground.

Another piece is the smaller 'Giant', a wood carving of Irish Oak which also doubles as a seating area. The piece was designed and carved by Sarunas Gimbutis.
