The Green Party has remained a constant opponent of the incinerator project due to the inadequate planning process and its inability to fit in with a sustainable waste management strategy for the Dublin region. It has now been revealed that, far from being required to deal with Dublin's own waste, the project can only hope to be marginally viable if it burns the majority of the residual waste generated in the whole country.
Cllr Cuffe said: "This report is deeply flawed and lacking in transparency. As Price Waterhouse Cooper have based their findings on data that is confidential and supplied by parties with a vested interest in the incinerator progressing, it isn't possible for anyone else to have faith in their approval for the project. PwC acknowledge that they haven't been able to independently verify any of the data supplied to them.

"RPS, the highly paid consultants for Dublin City Council, in their own report cite the European Commission's 'Towards a Circular Economy: A Zero Waste Programme for Europe' initiative. That document lays out a sustainable waste future for Europe, with a focus on considerably increasing the current levels of recycling. Dublin City Council, RPS and Covanta have fudged the impact of these obligations on the commercial viability of the Poolbeg "National Incinerator". The reports show that in order for the incinerator to be commercially viable after 2025, either waste generation must increase or recycling must be capped. The reports take for granted that Poolbeg will be burning most of the residual waste generated nationally by this point."
