The Chartered Institute of Housing is calling on the government to reduce unaffordable private rents, especially in Dublin.
Commenting on the recommendations of the 'Rent Stability in the Private Rented Sector' report, commissioned by the Private Residential Tenancies Board, Nicola McCrudden, Chartered Institute of Housing Director in the Republic of Ireland, said it's also imperative that private tenants have consistent property standards.
She said: "This report says that rent control will make matters worse by decreasing the number of homes, reducing the quality of stock and distorting the housing market by incentivising home ownership, which is also increasingly unaffordable in Dublin.
"Research from the OECD has also found that stricter rent control tends to be associated with lower quantity and quality of rental housing.
"We feel that the way to address both of these issues is by getting more homes built to take the pressure off prices, and by delivering a more professional private rented sector."
