Eleven new schools are to be built in Cork this year, the Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O'Sullivan TD has confirmed.

Labour TD Ciarán Lynch welcomed the news and said four of the schools are in Carrigaline, including a new Solas Special School, a new Gaelscoil and a new Carrigaline post-primary school.

He said: "Nationwide, these school projects will deliver over 27,800 permanent school places, and over 23,700 of them are additional places. The remainder will replace temporary or unsatisfactory accommodation.

"In total, 196 major school building projects will be onsite during 2015 – these include projects that were scheduled for 2014, and are either already onsite, or about to begin."
