A new £1.5 million Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit has been installed by Queen's on the Main Site which will reduce the carbon emissions of the organisations and provide a high quality working and learning environment for Queen's students and staff.

The scheme works by generating electricity and also capturing heat produced during the process. In turn, the heat is used to warm buildings and provide hot water.
The initiative forms part of an overall £10m investment programme in carbon reduction measures designed to reduce the carbon emissions from Queen’s University by 10,000 tonnes by 2020.
Belfast City Council will achieve an annual carbon saving of approximately 200 tonnes of carbon as a result of this joint initiative. The CHP installation will provide surplus heat to Belfast City Council for use in the Palm House and greenhouses on the adjacent Botanic Gardens site resulting in utility savings and a reduction in carbon emissions.
