Sinn Féin is calling for rent controls to be introduced for students.
Sinn Féin Councillor Cathleen Carney Boud said the lack of student housing shows the depth of the housing crisis overall.
Cllr Carney Boud said: "There are 16,000 students flocking to Dublin City University (DCU) and St Patricks College in my constituency of Dublin North West. This demand will increase significantly as the DIT Grangegorman development nears completion.
"In August of this year – when the majority of students hunt for housing – only 5 properties were available in Glasnevin & Drumcondra for less than €850 per month. 23 options were available below €1,400 per month for house shares and only 276 were advertised for room sharing.
"Sinn Féin is calling for the introduction of rent controls to stem the problem of increasing homelessness."
