Fianna Fáil has included the A5 development in its general election manifesto.
The A5 scheme has been delayed following financial issues and planning problems.
Candidate for Donegal Charlie McConalogue welcomed the news and said people living in the North West have been frustrated by the delays.
He said: "The failure to build the road is a lost opportunity for the area and is damaging trade and tourism. I have pressed for the A5 to be included in Fianna Fáil's vision for the future of Co Donegal and as part of our plans for building a strong all-island economy. We are fully committed to this project and seeing it to fruition. Our plans are fully costed and we have allocated funding to ensure that the Irish government lives up to its commitments on the project."
