A waste management firm based in Portadown, Co Armagh, has been fined for a number of waste offences at Antrim Court.
Portadown Recycling and Skip Hire Ltd was fined a total of £5,000 and ordered to pay court costs of £1150.20.
The firm pleaded guilty to a failure to prevent another person committing waste offences and failing to complete waste documentation following the illegal disposal of recyclable plastic waste at a farm in Crumlin, Co Antrim.
Officers from Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) visited the site in November 2013, and found approximately 280 tonnes of commercially processed, and potentially recyclable, plastic waste partially buried in a trench on farmland. Further investigations found the waste - baled, loose and bags of shredded plastics - had originated from Portadown Recycling and Skip Hire Ltd.
The company paid an authorised waste carrier to dispose of the waste but admitted they did not know if the disposal site was authorised by the Department. The waste carrier then illegally deposited the waste on farmlands in Crumlin.
