A former Labour minister has been slammed over legislation to introduce green bin waste charges.
Sinn Féin said the "bad legislation" by Minister Alan Kelly will discourage recycling of household waste and accelerate the already widespread practice of illegal dumping of rubbish.
The party also tabled a motion on the Dáil order paper which could halt the charges.
Spokesperson on Communications, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Brian Stanley TD said: "From both a fairness and equality point of view and an environmental point of view, this legislation is a disaster.
"Sinn Féin has therefore tabled a motion on the Dáil order paper which would stop the imminent imposition of these charges should it receive the support of a Dáil majority.
"We are urging Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to allow this motion to be taken and voted on at the earliest opportunity."
