The Alliance Party has called on the Department for Infrastructure to implement a "strategic plan" to ensure the upkeep of rural roads throughout Northern Ireland.
The party made the call after Minister Chris Hazzard announced £10 million is to be invested to resurface 1,000 roads.
Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong welcomed the move, however she said it is not enough to simply fix roads when they have fallen into a state of disrepair.
She said: "People in rural areas are aware of the neglect their roads have seen over the years. It is about time these roads got the support needed to make them both better and safer."
