Concerns have been raised after a cleaning contractor in Galway is proposing to reduce the number of hours it provides at the Valeo Vision Systems Plant in Tuam.

Specialised Sterile Environments (SSE) is hoping to half the number of hours from 600 to 300 per week.

However, SIPTU union members raised concerns after management refused to discuss the changes.

SIPTU Organiser, Robert Purfield, said: "Our members have received no information on how this change will impact on them although the company has stated that it intends to implement the cut in hours from next Monday, 18 July.

"SSE on its website highlights the awards the company has received for the high standard of its work. These awards would not have been obtained without the dedication of their hard working staff who the company is blatantly disregarding by refusing to discuss the changes it intends to implement at the Valeo plant in Tuam.

"SIPTU is calling on SSE to immediately engage with the workers’ representatives and to ensure that no cuts in workers’ hours of employment are implemented unilaterally."
