The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) has called on the government to allocate funding to develop a motorway between Cork and Limerick.
Sinn Féin TD for Limerick City Maurice Quinlivan said the infrastructural project is "critical" and a "win-win" situation for the government.
He said: "A motorway between Limerick and Cork has the potential to radically alter the region making it more attractive to foreign direct investment and kick start economic development.
"I agree with the CIF that the building of a motorway between Limerick and Cork is the most important infrastructure project in the terms of the Atlantic Economic Corridor.
"This project has the potential to address the issue of uneven development whereby the greater Dublin region has developed at the expense of the rest of the country."
