The state is sitting on over 500 vacant properties throughout Ireland, Sinn Fein has revealed.
Mr Peadar Tóibín described the figures as "shocking"
He said: "There is also 4,000 acres of land lying unused all over Ireland in possession of the state – with much of it in Dublin, where the worst effects of the homelessness crisis are felt.
"It's also worth noting that half of the properties that the IDA lease are vacant – which equates to a quarter of a million square feet.
"As we approach Christmas, the hardship that the homeless face is brought sharply to light. Nobody should have to sleep rough. It is especially galling to think that there are so much property under the power of the state that is being unused. Many of these vacant properties potential homes."
