The Government is being urged to "ramp up ambition" after it was revealed Ireland is set to miss its 2020 renewable energy targets.

The Green Party said while Ireland has done "quite well" on wind energy the Govt needs to scale up its ambition on solar PV and offshore wind.

The European Commission published a report which showed that the EU as a whole will meet it's 20% renewable targets by 2020, but reveals that Ireland may be forced to use 'statistical transfers' to meet reductions targets, which could cost the State millions.

Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan TD said: "In areas like renewable heat, renewable transport, retrofitting buildings and supporting the rollout of electric vehicles we need to be showing much more urgency. Making the transition to a low carbon economy will be good for the economy and for society. We have everything to gain by making the switch."
