Fianna Fáil is calling on the Government to "get to grips" with the housing crisis in Ireland.

Spokesperson for Dublin, John Lahart said it has clearly not achieved progress on delivering new social housing construction.

The Deputy made the comments following the publication of new timelines by Dublin City Council which revealed that just one rapid-build housing scheme currently under construction in Dublin city will be completed ahead of the deadline.

Deputy Lahart commented: "The use of hotels to accommodate families in need of housing has spiraled in recent months and last year alone, Dublin City Council spent €40 million housing homeless families in hotels and B&B's.

"Minister Coveney has previously promised that the use of hotel accommodation will end by July 1st but the significant delays in delivering rapid build homes will now potentially make meeting this deadline next to impossible," he added.

"The Social Housing Status Report figures released by the Minister, suggest that there will be approximately 1,000 new social homes constructed in 2017 however, the Action Plan had set a target of 5,000. Whats more, Dublin City Council has confirmed that the rapid build housing due to be completed at Cherry Orchard, Finglas, Darndale and Drimnagh by the end of 2016 will now not be completed until next year.

"Minister Coveney's near constant insistence that he is meeting targets on social housing is doing little to address the barriers to new social housing construction faced by Local Authorities."
