David Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd is to start construction to replace old water mains in Co Kilkenny.
Irish Water is investing €3 million in the scheme and the work will involve the replacement of water mains in Newrath, Graiguenamanagh, Leggettsrath and Cherrymount/Knocktopher.
It is expected to last for around 15 months.
By replacing aging and defective water mains in these areas, this project will result in a significant improvement in water supply for local residents and businesses. There will be a big reduction in unplanned outages due to burst pipes and other related issues. Water pressure will also be improved as leakage rates on these sections of mains will be reduced. Overall, this will result in a much improved service to customers in terms of efficiency and security of supply.
Lisa Cogan, Irish Water's Regional Infrastructure Lead, commented: "We are very pleased to be progressing with this project in Kilkenny which will have many benefits for local customers. As well as providing a more reliable water supply, this project will also lead to a big reduction in the volume of water lost to leakage, which will in turn result in better water pressure.
"This project, along with the Inistioge Thomastown Water Supply Scheme, which is currently under construction, is part of Irish Water's commitment to address historic issues with the water supply network in Kilkenny and around the county, ultimately providing better quality and resilience in the water supply network."
