A motion calling on the government to improve standards in the private rented sector in Ireland has been passed.
The Sinn Fein motion called on the government to bring forward measures to ensure compliance with minimum standard regulations.
The party's Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD said: "Protecting tenants, especially those who are most vulnerable, from rogue landlords must be a priority for this Government.
"We also need tougher action on the growing black market in the rental sector as exposed by RTÉ Investigates.
"The Sinn Féin motion calls on the government to adequately resource local authorities to ensure that a robust inspection scheme is put in place, to put in place an NCT style certification system for landlords and a review of penalties for those who break the law.
"While I acknowledge that the government has not opposed this motion the suggestion by Minister Murphy that a self-certification system for landlords would be the preferred government solution is not viable.
"We need an independent certification system. The self-certification process has not worked in the past and could result in additional costs for the landlord."
