A significant amount of the £5 million from the Department of Infrastructure will be invested to repair potholes on roads throughout Northern Ireland.
Permanent Secretary Peter May confirmed the news in a letter and said the money will be "directed primarily towards resurfacing on the local road network".
Alliance Infrastructure spokesperson Kellie Armstrong MLA welcomed the announcement.
She said: "Potholes represent a real danger to motorists and their vehicles, especially given recent snowfall and subsequent flooding, as well as cyclists and pedestrians. I hope this money goes someway to preventing further damage and stops potential injuries.
"This money will be spent before the end of March and I have already seen it start to take effect in my own constituency, with roads along the Ards Peninsula seeing the impact. I am pleased the Department has finally listened to the public outcry and are recognising the seriousness of this situation."
