The total electricity consumption generated from renewable sources in Northern Ireland has increased by 10% in the last year, according to new data from the Department of Economy.

A total of 34.8% was generated from renewable sources, however the figures released also show that NI are still over reliant on the use of Wind to generate energy from renewable sources, Sinn Fein spokesperson Cathal Boylan said.

Mr Boylan welcomed the results and also said NI needs a focused effort to diversify its renewable energy portfolio to allow for generation to be utilized from all renewable sources available.

He concluded: "While these figures are positive, we cannot rest on them and must now set ambitious targets for 2030 onwards to ensure that we move forward to a low carbon and eventually low carbon society as soon as possible."
