Irish Water is continuing to plan emergency upgrade works at Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant in Co Sligo.
A boil water notice has been in place for residents in Tubbercurry and the surrounding areas since 05 February.
A planning application for essential emergency works at the facility was lodged in May this year. Sligo County Council has now asked for further information from Irish Water to assist them in making a planning decision and work is now underway to prepare a response.
If approved, Irish Water said the proposed development will provide an effective cryptosporidium barrier and will mitigate against the formation of Trihalomethanes.
"However, we acknowledge that the long term solution will be an alternative water source to supply Tubbercurry and surrounding areas, and therefore we envisage that the proposed Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant upgrade works will be in place for up to 10 years," the company said.
