An archaeologist has discovered a portion of what is believed to be medieval town wall at a site in Carlow where water main replacement work is being carried out.
Irish Water is currently carrying out work to replace 600 metres of aging water mains in the Tullow Street area of the town. During the course of the work the find was made.
The archaeologist said he was expecting to find the wall, and once this was advised, an exploratory dig was progressed in order to facilitate exposure and recording of the structure. The project team have been working with the project archaeologist, Carlow County Council and the National Monuments Service to protect the structure and discuss its safe removal for possible display in Carlow Museum.
