Rebuilding Ireland Is 'Brexit Blind' - SF

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has slammed Rebuilding Ireland as "Brexit blind" over its continued reliance of the private sector.

The Department of Housing and Property Industry Ireland outlined the potential impact of Brexit on the housing market in a committee meeting this morning, 20 November.

The Department of Housing warned that there could be difficulty in accessing affordable accommodation if Brexit leads to an increase in net migration.

Deputy Ó Broin said: "The impacts of rising construction costs, disruption in accessing finance and potential labour restrictions could impact on the delivery of private sector housing.

"This could lead to increased pressure on the private rented market which in turn will impact on the Department of Housing's already mediocre social housing delivery targets as 69% of the targets in Rebuilding Ireland are reliant on HAP, RAS and long term leasing.

"It would also have an impact on the delivery of affordable homes.

"It is clear from the two committee hearings on the issue that Rebuilding Ireland and the housing elements of the National Planning Framework and the National Development Plan are Brexit blind."

He continued: "In the face of all the uncertainty surrounding Brexit it is unclear whether the government has any contingency plans to deal with its potential impact on already sluggish housing delivery.

"The government must reduce its over reliance on the subsidised private rented sector to meet social housing need.

"The government must also accelerate capital investment in non-market social and affordable housing while at the same time revising upwards its targets for the delivery of real social and affordable homes."
