The Department of Rural and Community Development awarded the funding to Cavan County Council and project partner Waterways Ireland under Measure Three of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme 2018.
The 6km trail will extend from Belturbet Town to Lock One Corraquill via the Old Aghalane Bridge, by reinstating the derelict footbridge along the Ragg River and following the towpath of the Woodford River to Lock One.

Minister Michael Ring announced the funding yesterday, 20 November, which will be matched by an additional €200,000.
The funds will help boost the development of a larger trail, which extends 54km from Belturbet, Co Cavan to Dromod, Co Leitrim.
Work is also currently progressing on Phase One of the 5.5km Ballyconnell to Bellaheady recreational trail.
The recreational trails are part of a wider strategy to develop an integrated network of greenways and blueways as outdoor recreational amenities and a tourism product in Cavan and the surrounding area.
