Housing Committee Supports Residential Tenancies Bill 2018

The Housing Committee has voiced its support for the Residential Tenancies (Student Rents, Rights and Protections) Bill 2018.

The Bill went through a pre-legislative scrutiny stage this morning, 22 November, with the Committee hearing from a number of stakeholders.

Introduced by Sinn Féin's Eoin Ó Broin TD and Kathleen Funchion TD, the Bill seeks to provide some legal clarity on licence agreements for Student Specific Accommodation with respect to the protections provided under the Residential Tenancies Acts.

Speaking on the government support, Deputy Ó Broin said: "It was positive that the intention of the Bill still retains widespread support amongst opposition TDs and the USI.

"It was equally encouraging to hear that the Department of Housing, who were presenting to the Committee, has confirmed that it will be bringing forward its own amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act when the Departments Bill reaches committee stage.

"The proposed amendments will cover all students, both public and private, under the rent reviews, the rent pressure zones and will confirm that they will be entitled to access the Residential Tenancies Board dispute resolution process.

"If these amendments tackle the issues outlined in our bill Sinn Féin is happy to withdraw it.

"However, until we see the government amendments we will be asking Committee to proceed with our Bill."
