Consultation is to be launched on the expansion of the Royal Canal Greenway Cycle scheme in the Dublin West area early this year.

A preferred route for the expansion from Maynooth to the Docklands is being discussed by the National Transport Authority, Fingal County Council and Kildare County Council.

The consultation will directly relate to the section of route from Castleknock to the boundary between both councils.

Local Fianna Fáil TD, Jack Chambers has praised the project, claiming it has the potential to "transform" the cycling infrastructure in the area.

Deputy Chambers said: "Cycling has very steadily become a popular mode of commute and as a hobby too. The success of other greenways nationwide shows the benefits that they can bring to a region. The wider promotion of active living can help improve people's health while simultaneously supporting the development of a greener environment.

"I am cautiously optimistic that we can expect work on this section of cycleway to get underway by late 2020 but I intend on following this process very closely and keep the pressure on," he concluded.
