Schoolchildren from across the Causeway Coast and Glens area of Northern Ireland have competed in a road safety quiz, with a Portstewart Primary School coming out on top.
The Portstewart team won the local heat at the Lodge Hotel in Coleraine on Tuesday 29 January, beating 25 other primary schools across the borough.
Rasharkin PS, the second place team, will join Portstewart in the regional final this March.
The annual event, which is for Primary 7 pupils, is organised by Road Safe NI to promote road safety awareness among young school children, who are a vulnerable road user group. The quiz covers road safety, road signs and general knowledge.
Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Brenda Chivers said: "Along with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), Council were delighted to support this very worthwhile road safety quiz. It was great to see so many local schools represented on the day. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and were able to showcase their impressive road safety knowledge. I wish Portstewart Primary School and Rasharkin Primary School all the best and good luck at the regional final."
PCSP Chairperson Councillor Margaret Anne McKillop commented: "The PCSP is committed to improving community and road safety throughout the Causeway Coast and Glens and I was privileged to attend our local heat of this popular initiative. I wish the competitors all the very best for the final in March."
Tony McKeown, from event sponsors CRASH Services, added: "We are delighted to be able to support the NI Primary School Quiz. We are involved in accident management and breakdown recovery services, so we have a close connection with road users and we are pleased to get involved with road safety projects like this."
The event was sponsored by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Causeway Coast and Glens Policing & Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and Crash Services.
