Plans for a sewerage scheme in County Donegal have taken a major step forward with the submission of a Compulsory Purchase Order.
The Burtonport Sewerage Scheme will see a new wastewater treatment plant built to end the discharge of untreated wastewater into Rutland Sound.
The new sewer pipes, pumping station and wastewater treatment plant have all been sized to accommodate an increase in the local population and will facilitate future growth in the area. The project will also ensure that the water quality standards set down by regulatory bodies will be achieved.
Irish Water submitted a Compulsory Purchase Order to An Bord Pleanála for land after failing to acquire the space on a voluntary basis.
The team is also seeking planning permission for the scheme from Donegal County Council.
