Govt Urged To Block Carbon Tax Increases

The government has been urged to block any carbon tax increases after a number of political parties voted to load the price hikes on households last week.

Hitting out at the decision, Sinn Féin's TD for Laois-Offaly, Brian Stanley TD said: "This energy price increase announced today comes days after Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Labour and the Green Party decides to load another layer of tax on people's bills. This State already has some of the highest energy prices in the EU and we already pay carbon tax, more increases just cannot be sustained.  


"Increases across gas and electricity prices were also announced last year by suppliers. Any increase in carbon tax, on top on these, is going to hit every household. There is no regard to those under financial pressures with the parties agreeing to raise further the cost of heating and lighting a home with an increase in carbon tax."

He added: "Sinn Féin resists any increase in carbon tax. It will not change behaviour and will not help the environment but will just put pressure on householders and push them over the edge. The cost of living continues to grow and the Government must act and commit to no increases in carbon tax."
