Work To Begin To Restore Unsafe County Antrim Path

Construction News Image
Work is set to get underway on plans to restore Blackhead Path in County Antrim next month, after sections of the route were closed due to safety issues.

One particular section of the path from the Whitehead car park was shut, having moved 30cms and 17cms in the space of a month. Large cracks along the path wall were also identified, which the council said indicates structural failure of the concrete wall and possible collapse.

FP McCann will serve as contractor on the restoration scheme, which will open the entire path out to visitors.

AECOM have also been integral to the plans which include repairs along the coastal paths from the Old Castle Road right up to the lighthouse and new steps and handrails.

The works, which will be carried out in stages over the next year, include:

• Concrete promenade repair;

• Gravel path repair;

• Widening paths and resurfacing;

• Installation of erosion protection;

• Rock scaling;

• Installation of rock armour and gabion baskets;

• Drainage system repair and new installations;

• Repair to existing footbridges;

• Installation of hand railing and repair of sections of existing; and

• Landscaping.

Chief Executive of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Anne Donaghy said: "We're very proud and excited to finally see work starting on this important project. The works will see this path restored to its former glory and leave a lasting legacy for generations to enjoy. The stunning coastal walk is not only an essential part of life for locals in Whitehead, but one of this area's biggest tourism assets.

"Whitehead is a stunning village with lots of eateries, shops, arts events and beautiful scenery to explore, and I would encourage everyone to make use of this whilst the works are ongoing.

"We are extremely keen to reopen the path as soon as the works are completed next year and appreciate the patience from the local community until that is done. We will continue to work closely with residents and the local community, including Blackhead Path Preservation Society, to get this breath-taking path open as soon as possible."
