New Pedestrian Bridge Opens In County Down

Construction News Image
A new pedestrian bridge has been opened in County Down, connecting the towns of Comber and Dundonald.

The 60-metre-long structure provides a connection between the Comber Greenway and Dundonald Leisure Park.

Opening the new development, Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council's Leisure & Community Development Committee, said: "The council welcomes this extension to the Comber Greenway allowing a connection between two of its facilities, Billy Neill MBE Country Park and Dundonald International Ice Bowl. As a council we support initiatives that promote the health and wellbeing of our residents and this new bridge gives them the opportunity to walk, run and cycle along a traffic-free route.

"This bridge will be lit at night offering residents and visitors to the area access to leisure and hospitality venues, which will help benefit the local night time economy. We would like to thank our partners, the Department for Infrastructure in their valuable support throughout the development and construction of this project. I am sure the council will be working with it on other projects in the years ahead."

Andrew Grieve, Head of the DfI Walking and Cycling Unit added: "This is a great example of what can be achieved when government agencies work together. This year the Department for Infrastructure completed the most recent phase of widening the Comber Greenway out to Billy Neill MBE Country Park. The widened path has produced a more attractive space to allow everyone to share their journey. The new bridge provides walking and cycling access to significant leisure facilities, links communities and contributes to encouraging more active travel in the area."

The project was joint funded by Lisburn & Castleregh City Council and the Department for Infrastructure, marking the completion of another stage of the Comber Greenway infrastructure.
