Water Supply Improvements Underway In Ennis

Construction News Image
Local businesses and residents in Ennis, Co Clare, are set to benefit from an improved water supply.

Irish Water has commenced work in the Parnell Street area to replace ageing water mains.

This work will be carried out over an eight-week programme and is expected to be complete by 23 November.

It will involve the replacement of more than 560 metres of old cast iron water mains along Parnell Street between Carmody Street and Salt House Lane. The old mains will be replaced with modern, high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes.

These works are being completed in advance of the proposed Public Realm Enhancement Project in order to ensure a modern water infrastructure is in place while also keeping disruption to a minimum and ensuring value for money.

Gerry O'Donnell, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead with Irish Water, said: "The benefits from this work will be significant, both by improving the water supply and supporting the progress of the exciting Public Realm Enhancement Project being carried out by Clare County Council. While water pipes are generally unseen as they are buried underground, it is important to remember that a modern, functioning water network is as important to a town like Ennis as the engine under the bonnet is to your car.

"We are aware that works of this nature in an urban area can cause some disruption. We would like to assure the public that, together with our contractors and Clare County Council, we will be liaising closely with the local business community to ensure that any inconvenience can be kept to a minimum."

Leonore O'Neill, Senior Executive Officer, Physical Development with Clare County Council, added: "These works will be undertaken as advance works to facilitate a Public Realm Enhancement Project on Parnell Street, the Lanes and Bow-ways which successfully secured Urban Regeneration and Development Funding under Project Ireland 2040.

"The timing of the water mains upgrade is an example of the excellent collaboration and co-operation between Irish Water and Clare County Council to ensure that all required works are undertaken consecutively. This will ensure the efficient expenditure of public finances and the best overall outcome for the public."

Shareridge Utilities Ltd is delivering the works in partnership with Clare County Council on behalf of Irish Water.
