Plans for a €12.5 million social housing development in Clonakilty, Co Cork, have progressed with a key appointment.

MMD Construction Cork Ltd has signed contracts with Cork County Council to deliver the scheme.

This project will see 57 homes built at Beechgrove, comprising a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom houses.

A multidisciplinary team led by Cork County Council has brought the scheme from detailed design to construction stage.

Welcoming the progress, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O'Sullivan said: "The provision of these, quality, energy efficient homes will go a long way towards addressing housing needs in an area of high demand like Clonakilty. In terms of sustainability, these houses demonstrate best practice in design and will achieve an A-rating on completion. The homes will be highly energy efficient using modern air to water based heating systems which will provide the dual benefits of reducing the carbon footprint of the home as well as taking into account the potential impact of fuel poverty for future tenants."

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey, added: "Cork County Council's continuing commitment to meeting housing needs through the Social Housing Capital Programme will see 727 homes made available this year and over 3,000 social houses provided in the period 2018- 2021 throughout Cork County."

The new Beechgrove homes are expected to be completed by early 2021.
