Offaly County Council has pledged its commitment to climate action by signing the Charter of the EU Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change.

This move makes Offaly County Council the first local authority in the Midlands Region to sign the Charter, supporting the goals of the European Green Deal and the EU Climate Adaptation Strategy.

Speaking at the signing of the Charter, Chief Executive Anna Marie Delaney said: "We recognise the pivotal role the Council holds as an agent of positive Climate Action, and aim to proactively demonstrate public sector leadership on climate action as well as being key mobilisers of action at local and community level.

"Climate Action is a core principal of our Corporate Plan and is something we are very passionate to deliver."

Climate Action Officer, John McNally commented: "By signing up to the Charter and the tenets of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, Offaly County Council will become part of a community of practice on adaptation to climate change, and have the opportunity to network, connect with, share experiences with and learn from other regions and communities in Europe.

"The EU Climate Adaptation Mission aims to support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030. We look forward to continuing our journey to a climate proofed economy and resilient society."

Director of Services, Tom Shanahan praised the Charter, adding that it "complements the recently launched EMERGE training and mentoring programme delivered by our colleagues in the Eastern and Midlands CARO Office, Urban Foresight and The Wheel through funding provided under Just Transition and the Carbon Tax fund".
