The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) and JP Corry has launched a new Early Career Architects Design Competition.
This year's competition challenges Early Career Architects to pitch creative ideas for the repurposing of a red phone box in Belfast city centre.
As part of the BT 'Adopt a Kiosk' scheme, RSUA has registered to adopt a telephone kiosk on North Street at the junction with Waring Street.
The phone box's original design was the result of a competition which was won by architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, in 1924. The K2 kiosk was the first ever version of the red box, the version in Belfast is the K6.
The RSUA and JP Corry competition aims to:
• Generate debate, interest and discussion on the future uses of public phone boxes of all types as they increasingly fall out of use.
• Explore what role mini design competitions can play in delivering imaginative small projects which enrich the urban environment.
• Give new life to a small piece of our built heritage.
• Unleash and showcase the creative talents of early-career architects from Northern Ireland.
The deadline for submissions is the 16 October 2023.
