Derry City and Strabane District Council has announced that improvement works at the existing Townhall Street public car park in Newtownstewart have been completed.
The aim of this project, which is a a culmination of a £50,000 investment programme by the Council, to improve the appearance, functionality, and usage of this key free public car park facility. The investment has helped to upgrade the carpark by funding resurfacing works, new boundary treatment and relining.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jason Barr said: "The car park plays an important role and contribution to the town centre in providing 25 spaces for the benefit of local businesses, shoppers and residents, and I hope the improvement works will encourage greater use of this free parking facility."
A spokesperson for the Newtownstewart Traders Group also welcomed the project. They said: "It's great to see this significant investment that Council have made in upgrading Townhall Street Car Park and that it will now help to accommodate shoppers and workers to the area. This development is greatly appreciated particularly in the lead up to Christmas and shoppers can avail of stress-free shopping in a small local town, great prices, excellent service and this in turn will help support the local small businesses that operate in Newtownstewart. The Traders would also wish to highlight there are also additional car parking spaces available at Castle Brae and at St Eugenes Community Hub on Oldcastle Road".
