Farrans Construction has began works to replace more than 200 metres of ageing cast iron water mains in County Galway.
The programme of works, which is being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann at St Michael's Place in Ballinasloe, will result in the mains being replaced with new services.
Once completed, this will supply the residential area with a more secure and reliable water supply and will significantly reduce high levels of leakage on the network.
The works are expected to be completed by the Spring.
Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, discussed the works. He said: "Not only will these upgrades result in fewer leaks and a reduced risk of contamination, but the new pipes will also significantly lower the instances of bursts and outages on the network, leading to a more secure supply for the residents of St Michael's Place."
The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers' water supply.
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management measures will be in place during these periods of work, but local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.
The works may also involve some short-term disruptions to customers' water supply, but crews will make every effort to minimise any disruptions these necessary works may cause.
The project team will ensure that impacted customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned interruptions.
