A project to install new Variable Message Signs (VMS) along the A2 at Holywood, County Down, got underway on Tuesday 1 April.
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) announced that the new signage will provide real-time travel information for commuters heading towards Belfast city centre and beyond from the North Down area.
The initial phase of the work, which involves laying foundations and installing the posts for the signs, will take place until Friday 4 April. To facilitate these works, it will be necessary to close the slip road adjacent to Palace Barracks and implement a lane closure on the city-bound carriageway of the A2 between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm each day during this period. The footpath in the immediate vicinity will also be closed.
During these closures, a diversion route will be in operation via Jackson’s Road, Old Holywood Road, and Knocknagoney Road. Motorists are advised to follow the signed diversions and allow additional time for their journeys.
The Department has indicated that further lane closures will be required at a later stage when the signs themselves are being erected. Details of these closures will be communicated to the public once dates are finalised. The overall project is expected to be completed by the end of May 2025.
A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure stated that the work and associated traffic management have been carefully planned to minimise disruption to the public. However, road users are urged to adhere to the traffic arrangements in place for the safety of both workers and drivers.
The Department also noted that the schedule for the work is dependent on favourable weather conditions.
