Uisce Éireann is to begin a significant upgrade of the water network in Athlone.
The project, part of Uisce Éireann's Growth and Development Programme, involves the replacement and expansion of over 2.5 kilometres of watermains across Coosan, Cornamagh Road, and Brawny Road. Site investigations are already underway, with main construction expected to commence in early summer. The works, which will be carried out by Coffey Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann, are expected to take approximately six months and will be phased to minimise disruption for local residents.
Donal O'Connor, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, highlighted the importance of the project for the town: "These upgrades will ensure that the water network is fit for purpose to support sustainable growth and development while also improving the resilience of the drinking water network enabling communities to thrive. We’d like to thank the people of Athlone in advance for their patience and support as we finalise the design and carry out these critical works."
This infrastructure enhancement is one of many being delivered across the country through the national Growth and Development Programme, which targets strategic investment in water and wastewater systems to unlock social and economic potential, including the provision of vital housing.
