Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has urged the British government to provide clear details on its financial contribution to the redevelopment of Casement Park. His call follows a large rally in West Belfast, attended by hundreds of Gaelic sports enthusiasts, demanding progress on the long-delayed stadium project.
Speaking after the rally, Mr Maskey, the MP for West Belfast, emphasised the need for swift action. "Today, the message was clear – Casement Park has lay dormant for too long, and now it's time to move forward and build Casement," he stated.
He highlighted the potential benefits of the stadium's reconstruction: "The reconstruction of this stadium will not only provide a new home for Ulster Gaels, but also be an economic driver for the surrounding communities, creating jobs and attracting investment."
Mr Maskey then directly addressed the British government, demanding transparency regarding funding. "The British government must clarify what funding it will provide to enable us to move forward with this game-changing project," he said.
He also called on local political figures to champion the project. "And I would urge the Communities Minister to work alongside Executive ministers to champion this new stadium and the incredible benefits it will bring," he added.
Concluding his statement, Mr Maskey expressed his desire for a positive outcome: "Let's move forward together and build a first-class stadium that young Gaels can once again look to with excitement, energy and a true desire to compete, excel and create lasting memories."
The redevelopment of Casement Park has been a subject of significant debate and delay, and this rally and subsequent statement highlight the continued pressure for a resolution.
