The Maynooth and Environs Joint Local Area Plan has now came into effect following a collaborative effort between Kildare County Council and Meath County Council.

The Joint Plan for 2025 – 2031, which replaces the Maynooth Local Area Plan 2013–2019, sets out a comprehensive policy framework to help tackle critical deficits in the town's social infrastructure. To this end, the Joint Plan incorporates provision for the development of vital facilities in Maynooth, including a community hub, library and a dedicated Municipal Sports Facility.

As a Metropolitan Key Town, Maynooth holds significant importance both at a local and regional level.

The town has been identified in the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy 2019-2031 as having the capacity for future growth potential to accommodate above average growth in the region, corresponding with the necessary investment in employment creation, services, amenities and sustainable transport.
