A County Limerick-based active travel project has scooped the Public Realm Up to €5M category honours at this year's Irish Construction Excellence Awards (ICE Awards).

The Childers Road Active Travel Route, a scheme from the Active Travel team at Limerick City and County Council (LCCC), was recognised at the ICE Awards' Gala night celebrating the pursuit and achievement of excellence in construction.

The Childers Road Public Realm Active Travel Scheme was designed to enhance connectivity and accessibility within Limerick city. This complex project aimed to improve infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists while integrating active travel routes into the wider city network.

It connects the east to the west of the city, linking Dooradoyle and Raheen with the University of Limerick and Castletroy, along with other schools, businesses, and amenities.

Specifically, the scheme spans from the Roxboro Road to Ballinacurra junction, incorporating new cycle lanes, improved footpaths, upgraded bus stops, pedestrian-controlled crossings, and signalised junctions.

The scope of the work included:

• Installing segregated cycle tracks and junction tightening. 

• New pedestrian crossing points at Roxboro Roundabout. 

• Footpath widening for improved accessibility. 

• Enhanced and safer front-of-school areas for four schools. 

• Landscaping and the protection of existing trees, requiring innovative construction techniques.

Acting Director of Service, Transportation and Mobility at LCCC, Hugh McGrath, commented: "This award is a recognition of the hard work and innovative approaches our team has employed to enhance Limerick's infrastructure. The Childers Road project is a prime example of how we can create safer, more sustainable travel options that benefit the entire community."
