An overall investment totalling more than €28m will be spent this year on improving and developing roads in Kilkenny as part of the county council's Roadworks Scheme.

Funding to carry out these works is provided by Transport Infrastructure Ireland for national roads, and by the Department of Transport and Kilkenny County Council for regional and local roads. Kilkenny has more than 3,282kms of public road which is monitored and managed through a national pavement management system.

Included in this year's Scheme are other welcomed increases in funding for bridge works, community involvement schemes, and climate adaptation measures.

In welcoming this year's Roadworks Scheme, Cllr Deirdre Cullen, Chair of the council's Strategic Policy Committee for Transport and Infrastructure, acknowledged the role of all roads staff in the Area Offices throughout the county. Cllr Cullen also welcomed an increase in funding for low-cost safety measures as part of the 2025 Scheme.

Meanwhile, Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael McCarthy particularly welcomed the increase in funding to tackle local tertiary roads under the community involvement scheme, as well as funding to progress the northern ring road extension for Kilkenny City.

The delivery of the Roadworks Scheme each year is one of Kilkenny County Council’s most critical services making best use of resources and maximising the number of projects completed.
