The first phase of Belfast International Airport's ambitious £100 million five-year investment programme has been marked by the opening of a new terminal extension.

The initial £25 million phase includes a state-of-the-art security hall equipped with Next Generation Security equipment, meaning passengers no longer need to remove liquids or electronics from their hand luggage. It also features an significantly upgraded and immersive 1600 sqm duty-free store, and enhancements to the arrivals area, including a new external forecourt.

The forecourt area has been created with the building design taking inspiration from the design of the original terminal completed in 1963. The most notable feature of this building was the angular roof construction and this is still prevalent today, both externally and internally.

Reminiscent of an aircraft wing, this formed the inspiration for the design of the new extension, generating a new façade with a similar angular wing effect reflecting the historical significance of the original building and tying together the old and new buildings.

The terminal was officially opened by First Minister Michelle O'Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly.

Praising the development, First Minister Michelle O'Neill said: "This impressive transformation of the terminal building shows Belfast International Airport's commitment to improving its facilities and operational efficiency in order to enhance passenger experience. Improving our air connectivity with Europe and the rest of the world is key for growing business and tourism."

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly added: "Belfast International Airport plays a pivotal role in connectivity, tourism and economic growth and the opening of this new, modern terminal extension will bring a range of benefits. I want to commend the airport's management and its owners for their commitment to making such a significant investment."

Meanwhile, Dan Owens, Chief Executive of Belfast International Airport, owned by VINCI Airports, has reiterated the airport's commitment to working with the Executive and airline partners to develop its route network, emphasising its role as an "economic driver for this region."

Pierre Anjolras, CEO of VINCI, and Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of Concessions at VINCI and President of VINCI Airports, were also present at the opening and outlined ongoing investment plans.
