Northern Ireland construction firm Farrans has received a RIBA London Award for Education for its work on the Quadrangle Building project at King's College London.

The award celebrates the successful transformation of the UK Department of Engineering's space within the Quadrangle Building, an ambitious refurbishment and alteration project set in a heritage-rich location between the Grade I-listed King's Building and Somerset House. The two-storey basement, previously underutilised, lies beneath the external quadrangle deck in one of central London's most iconic areas, bridging The Strand and The Embankment.

King's College London, one of the UK's most prestigious universities, now benefits from revitalised, flexible accommodation that enhances both its educational infrastructure and the surrounding historic environment.

RIBA Journal stated: "This project has overcome many complex challenges to transform lost space into useful accommodation and also provide a precious new piece of the central London public realm. The new quadrangle space immeasurably improves the setting and access to two of the Grade I-listed structures of Somerset House East Wing and the King's Building, and provides adaptable spaces for students and staff of King’s College London."

The project was delivered in collaboration with architects Hall McKnight.
