Northern Ireland construction company FP McCann has successfully completed works at the Inner Walled City Public Realm project in County L'Derry.

The Inner Walled City Public Realm is for the provision of new public footways, carriageways, open spaces, street lighting and furniture. The intention is to regenerate the streetscape with new high quality stone surfacing, new kerb alignment to improve the streets for pedestrians, new lighting and public art.

Construction works commenced in January on the section on Magazine Street between Butchers Gate and Castle Gate with excavation of the footpath, before reconstructing with natural stone Caithness flag stones. The carriageway was then laid with a combination of grey and silver high quality natural stone setts.

All excavation works have been monitored by an archaeologist as part of the scheduled monument consent which was required for working adjacent to the City Walls. New granite setts were installed between the carriageway and the walls with a lime mortar used between the setts and the walls as agreed with Historical Environment Division.

As part of the project's social value, FP McCann has been working with the local Mencap office on Bishop’s street to provide certified training, employment and placement opportunities for people with a learning disability to gain transferable workplace skills and experience.
