Essential planned works on the Glenary water supply network are scheduled to commence on Monday, May 26, as part of the delivery of Uisce Éireann's €10m investment project currently underway.

These works will allow all customers on the Glenary water supply to be connected directly to the reservoir which will enhance the reliability of the supply into the future. The works are planned to take place from 9am to 5pm.

Discussing the improvements, Uisce Éireann's Programme Manager, John Hickey said: "We acknowledge the impact of upgrade works on our customers in Clonmel in recent times, particularly with unplanned outages and periods of low water pressure. This has been as a result of work to temporarily connect new infrastructure to the existing ageing systems. This stage of the works will be complete with the final connection of all customers on the Glenary supply to the reservoir next week.

"The installation of a new larger pipeline will ensure all customers supplied by Glenary Water Treatment Plant are served directly from the reservoir. Glenary Water Treatment Plant is subject to frequent shutdowns due to water quality challenges, as occurred following the weather event last Tuesday. This will ensure a more resilient water supply for the town as customers will have up to 24-hour storage during any future outages at Glenary Water Treatment Plant.

"This stage of the works has been complex, and the network challenges highlight the importance of the upcoming plant upgrade which will commence next month. Once complete the works will help to safeguard water supply in the town into the future.

"We'd like to thank the community in Clonmel for their patience during these works and we will endeavour to communicate better with customers, particularly during periods of unplanned supply interruptions."

As a result of the works, customers in Clonmel and surrounding areas who are supplied by the Glenary Water Treatment Plant may experience reduced water pressure, and, in some instances, the works may cause supply interruptions at the extremities of the network and areas of higher ground.

Following the works, normal supply may take three to four hours to fully restore to all areas as the water refills the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network. As the water supply returns, some instances of discoloured water may be increased in the short term.
